Jewelcrafting Changes: Don't Buy in to the Hype

Hype. That's all I can say. It has recently been reported by tons of WoW blogs that the sky is falling and that the world will end in 17 days. No, not really but it has been reported that Blizzard is going to murder the Obsidium Shuffle.

What's "happening?"
MMO-Champion reported on PTR Build 13850 that " * Bold Carnelian, Solid Zephyrite, Subtle Alicite, Perfect Quick Alicite, Sovereign Nightstone, Regal Jasper, Resolute Hessonite, and any cut of uncommon gem now sells to NPC for 75 silver instead of 9 gold." based on that math, it brings the floor cost of a price of Obsidium Ore based on Gem Value down from a hefty 54g to a near non-existent 4.5g. This means that all of those great buys you've gotten recently on Obsidium Ore, could send you to the poor house.

However, I'm not buying into it. This is, at very best, speculation. MMO-Champion, in my mind, can oft times be viewed as the TMZ of the WoW world. Always first to break a story, but not really based on 100% fact sometimes. Who remembers Epic Gem Transmutes? You know, the one where their cool down was going to be removed from the game completely, and we were all going to be able to cash in on people looking to re-gem from Arm Pen to Strength? Then the patch went live and none of that happened?

I do. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Could it end up happening? Maybe. Is it plausible? I doubt it. Blizzard knows what they have in place, and I feel they have put it into place for a reason. My guess is this was a PTR oversight.

One of two things is going to happen. When this patch drops I'll be sitting here with my foot in my mouth, or I'll be saying I told you so. Either way, I'm not worried. I'll continue to shuffle until I can no longer go to the vendor and sell for 9g.

The truth is, the world is ending and you are dying. But aren't we all? I'm not trying to a pessimist, but it's fact. How does that correlate? Why worry about things you cannot change? Just be able to roll with the punches :)

Amen, Wes. I wouldn't even call it "murder" - it's a nerf. Albeit, it would be a big nerf if 75s went live, but I doubt it. I think we'll see a nerf, but not one of that magnitude.

Also - there are a few folks out there that think that even if 75s goes live, 5g for uncuts will remain unscathed. Don't count on it.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record - gold enters the WoW economy in three ways: Quests/Rewards, Vendoring goods, Mob Drops. The 5->9g was just too good to really last, and the widespread botting accelerated the ensuing inflation. This nerf, when it comes, will be nothing more than a way in which the devs can easily reign in the inflation.

"They say that all beauty must die - I say it just moves on." I'm in a quotey-mood today (that was off A7X's last album). The shuffle won't die, it will move on to being nerfed and will forever lie in the realm of spreadsheeters now that there will be no ore safely under the vendor floor for quite some time.

Are you willing to let all the uncommons in your bank lose 92% of their value in one shot? If so be my guest. I'm not willing to take that risk myself.

There is no real risk in vendoring them now as most gem prices on my server are hovering around current vendor cost anyway.

Also added this to my growing link list on my post "The Obsidium Shuffle Is Dead. Patch 4.1 Uncommon Gem Vendor Price 75s."

Glad to see you're thinking the same way I am. Let all the chicken littles dump all their ore so we can buy it up.

With uncuts at 5g and cuts at 75s, something is wrong. Why is everyone so quick to jump on this bandwagon without researching it. Data mined data isn't always accurate, sometimes never is implemented.

Until I see a blue post or patch notes, it ain't happening at all.

Probably another epic gem CD removal like last year.

Nobody is forcing you to cut the gems.

As I pointed out to Basil in WI, for now the uncut price seems to be remaining at 5g. So in fact the price of a stack of obsidium is dropping from 54g to 30g. 9 to 5 is a 44% drop. Large but not as bad as a 900 to 75 drop of 92%.

Could be the 75s does not make live; could be the 5g uncut gets changed. there are no guarantees. But the risk/reward is clearly to not have any ore or uncommons when the patch hits. You can argue how many rares to keep.

Pre-patch there is no reason not to continue shuffling. It's just the little downside/least risk way is to get results of the prospecting vendored prepatch.

I see it changing nothing, I really don't vendor much of my stock, although I did vendor my back-stocked green gems (save the red ones). That being said, I DE everything so this will just leave me stuck with a bunch of zeph. O, wait thats my situation now. :-P

So unless this (supposed) change the bottom drops out of the enchanting mats we'll all be fine. This will only affect the people who don't truly 'shuffle.'
