Discussion: Stealth Alchemy Nerf?

Be it no secret. Of all of the professions in the World Of Warcraft, outside of Jewelcrafting, Alchemy is my favorite. It's not for the traditional reasons of potions you can make, or the free epics. No, it's for the procs. One of the most popular posts I've ever written here at Capped By Cata was about the need to be Transmute Spec as an alchemist.

So today, I wanted to bring something up to the masses. I've been in the process of leveling my forth alchemist to take advantage of the Truegold Bonanza so while I have four transmutes ready to go everyday, the real money was in the procs.

The Change
I would say up until about two weeks ago I was getting a fairly decent proc rate on everything I was doing. I would say in the neighborhood of 20 percent, or better. Everything from Truegold, Volatile Airs, Inferno Rubies. All of these were averaging out pretty well. However, upon my most recent week of playing all of my procs have disappeared. Not just truegold, but everything. Granted I haven't been transmuting as many gems, but I'm still not having any luck.

So here is my question. What are you guys experiencing? I posed the question on Twitter and got some responses, but I'd really like to hear from more of you. Can this really just be bad RNG? I'm not trying to QQ by any means, I truly just wonder if someone dropped the Nerf hammer.

While it doesn't make a large difference if they did nerf the transmute procs, if I could get some kind of confirmation I may structure things a little bit differently.

Results
So please share with me your results. I'm on 7 straight days of 0 Truegold procs over 3 Alchemists (So that's 21 casts) and haven't had any gem procs either. While I'm hoping for poor RNG I don't think will be that lucky.

Patch 4.2: Can't get rid of an undercutter? Set a trap!

During the most recent episode recording of Auction House Junkies (which unfortunately will never get published due to an unforeseen thunderstorm) we discussed market change cycles currently influenced by patch 4.2. One of the topics we touched on was undercutting.

Undercutting
Undercutting is one of the things I most often receive questions about. Undercutting is often times the bane of a new auctioneers existence. However, with proper planning and market knowledge you can turn undercutting into your new way for both profiting and acquiring under-priced goods. During my recent Patch 4.2 Gem Update I talked about how I had bullied most players out of the market with posting massive amount of stock and taking advantage of undercutters. This is something that any auctioneer can take advantage of. The key to being successful is both persistence and patients.

Setting Up Your Strategy
The strategy I want to explain can be used with just about any market in the game. However, I prefer to use it in markets that I'm either A) Very knowledgeable in or B) Are slow moving. One of the markets where I consistently use this tactic with success is Truegold. Truegold is something I have always been an advocate of but as patch 4.2 has brought us a ton of new BoE items requiring Truegold prices and demand have both soared. Truegold fits both of the criteria listed above. I have been playing in it for a good amount of time, and it's a relatively slow market. That meaning that one player can't make 100 Truegold in a night and post them all and crash the market. It's relatively safe.

Implement Your Strategy
The tactic is simple. Promote undercutting! For example, Truegold on my server was hovering around 450g for a few weeks. Knowing that new patterns are coming, I prepared for the increase in demand. With only being to able to create 3 a day on average over all of characters, I had to use some more creative tactics to fortify my stockpile. I would create 3 Truegold and post them in the morning at about 50g under the current going rate. Rarely, these would sell. However, on most occasions, they would not sell and I would find 5-6 more bars listed under my price. I would then buy those bars, cancel my auctions, and prepare for the next day.

This allowed me to create a well sorted stockpile at a very low cost considering the current going rate of roughly 700 gold on my server now. So while I was limited in how many I could create a day, I was unlimited in the amount of impatient undercutters I could take advantage of.

While the strategy can still be very much implemented today, you need to study your market. I know that for some reason Truegold on my server doesn't usually sell before 7PM server time. If I post at 7AM on 12 hour, I will receive them back, unsold. I can still use this to my advantage by posting low and hoping the undercutting continues. This is a pretty basic idea, but it can work in any and all markets as long as you are willing to invest some time to learning the ins and outs of it. The only real risk is selling some items under-priced, but the rewards are much more lucrative.

How To Capitalize on 4k Honor Refund

Merry PvPMas to you, dear reader! That's right, as some of you may have noticed if you purchased any Season 9 PvP gear during the week before Season 10 PvP gear was issued then you probably have a 4k honor refund sitting on your character, along with a nice letter sent from Blizzard thanking you for your understanding.

The catch to this is the 4k honor is rewarded over the honor cap. So you must spend your honor in order to receive anymore honor currently. This honor gift has sent a spike in demand rippling throughout most servers. That's a good thing for you, Goblin.

Justice Point Boots

This is my number one way for cashing in your honor. I wrote about adding 6,000 gold to your weekly income earlier this month and this is a great way for you to jump start that process. If you view these honor points as an investment, rather then a way to gear your character, I highly recommend this option. To start you'll need to convert your honor points to justice points. Let's break down the math.

4,000 Honor Points / 375 (The cost of one conversion) = 10.6667
10.6667 * 250 (The number of Justice Points received on conversion) = 2666.66
Ok, so really we can't use fractions and be able to convert, so you're looking at being able to have access to a total of 2500 Justice Points. Unless you had more honor already stored.

2500 Justice Points will buy you one pair of boots and leave you 850 Justice Points to play with. Couple this conversion with some quick dungeon farming (Think Chaos Orbs) and you've landed yourself two pairs of boots. On most servers that should net you anywhere from 4-5,000 gold.

Gems
Talk about demand spike! Players of all sorts are cashing in on this. If they're not converting their honor over for boots, then they are either buying PvP gear or converting for Justice gear. Either way it means a lot of new gear rapidly has entered the market which all needs to be gemmed. I posted just recently about my gem endeavors in 4.2, but this has already made a huge impact. Brilliant Inferno Rubies have jumped from 97 gold to 197 gold overnight and I can't keep them stocked. If you have any stock of gems ready to go right now, make sure you're making them all available.

I know a lot of people questioned me about my gem wall technique, but honestly this is the one time everyone should be posting every gem they have on the Auction House. I've watched my Auction House run dry on two cuts of red gems twice today. And I'm posting 20 at a time. Don't let a small posting fee cost you a sell.

Enchants
This is another fantastic area of opportunity for you. All pre-made enchanting scrolls and enchanting mats should raise in price over the next few days. Things like Landslide and Hurricane could be big sellers. 4000 Honor points to blow just might put a few players over the edge on purchasing those expensive weapons.

Another point of note here is to not forget your enchants for low level weapons either. With 4,000 Honor points players could be looking to pick up some heirloom weapons or gear as well. I'll be posting a few fiery enchants at extra large mark up, just in case.

Enjoy the bounty, everyone! Please feel free to share your comments in the comments section, shoot me an e-mail at CappedByCata@Gmail.com or send me a message on Twitter @CappedByCata

Patch 4.2 Gem Update!

It's no secret that my biggest focus in patch 4.2 has been the gem market. Most notably, the red gem market. I put together a ton of articles pre-patch 4.2 about how I was going about collecting all of the inferno rubies I had stock piled. When I combined the lazy obsidium shuffle (may it rest in peace) and my heartblossom buyout strategy, I landed myself a healthy nest egg of inferno rubies.

Results
I've gotten several twitter questions, comment responses, and overall inquiries about how the "Gem Wall" strategy was working out. I recently spoke more about it on the Powerword Gold Podcast. But I wanted to take today to show you how my strategy has worked. And worked well.

Pictured above is a clip from my MySales from the past week. It was a really good week for me. The reasoning behind this is two fold. First of all, it looks like I have finally started to deplete the majority of the competition on my servers stock. By forcing them to sell low to either me, or other players I have ran them out of the market, or drained their supply completely. Couple this with the tremendous lack of raw resources on my server, and it's a great way for me to corner the market with my large supply.

Secondly, my overall price per item and amount of items sold has drastically increased. Last week, the average moving price on my rubies was roughly 85 gold. More over, I moved roughly 2/3 of what I sold this week. I believe this is because of decreased competition. Because of this I have been able to raise my average item cost to an impressive 97 gold per item. That's a 12g rise in a week. Remember, this is an overall rating. Sure they still dip down into the 80s, but more then likely they are spiking in the 140's. While I have started to control the market, I don't have enough stock nor enough time to completely gouge the market and force a 140g price per gem.

Winning!
So to all of those who wanted me to wait it out, I just wanted to gloat about my little victory. While it may not seem like a huge amount of gold per item. Remember, I have no more then 24g invested in each one of these rubies. (That's based on 4.1 prices of Carnelian as well.) That means, on average I'm making 73 gold per item sold in pure profit. Anyway you slice it, I think that's still pretty damn good!

Cold's Gold Factory Blogging Carnival: Summer Strategy!

This post is written in contribution to Cold's Gold Blogging Carnival. A monthly blogging Carnival hosted by Cold of Cold's Gold Factory. Be sure to check him out daily for gold making updates.

The topic that my Auction House Junkies Co-Host has presented us with this month is; how has summer effected my Gold Making Strategy when it comes to moving goods on the Auction House? I'll do my best to answer it!

Increased Posting

This is probably the biggest change in my overall gold making strategy. I've had to significantly increase the amount of times I'm posting on a daily basis. Traditonally, I would post once in the morning, and once in the evening. However, now with the increased economic activity that patch 4.2 brought us, the increased summer population playing the Auction House, and of course my crusade to own the gem market I've had to increase my posting anywhere from four to five times a day. Depending on the day of the week and the current market environment.

Additional Markets

With more competetion also comes a little more Auction House Activity. So I'm working on alts to get back into old markets. I cannot sit back and wait for the gold to come to me. This competition is making me work a bit harder, which means I need to increase the size of my alt army.

Good Buys
Whether it's an undercut war that I become the overall winner by buying out everything, or it's just something I need for one of my characters, the addition to more summer players means I'm getting better deals. This is feeding quick profession leveling on my new alts and is also bringing in easy profits when two under-cutters get into it.

These are probably the three biggest things that have changed in regards how I approach gold making in the this regard. Hopefully you may be able to implement some of these strategies to make sure summer pays of with a golden bonus for your pocket book!

More content will continue to be sent to you, so you can keep up with all of the gold making gloriousness that Capped By Cata has to offer on the go.

With that said, I want to announce the winner!

The Winner is: Misha!
That's about all the information I have on the winner at this point. An e-mail has been dispatched to you, hopefully you'll feel us in on a little bit of info and your gold making secrets.

Update! A Message from our Winner!

"Hi Wes,
Thank you very much for the opportunity to win such a nice mount and of course the great ways of gold making you share with the rest of us.

I'd gladly share my gold making tactics thou they are not much.
I play on the EU realm Quel'Thalas and have 3 characters which I use to make a profit - Lemouri a warlock (jewlcrafring/alchemy), Misha a priest (enchanting/tailoring) and Zintiel a death knight (mining/engineering).

I mine ore with the dk, send it over to the lock to prosper the ore.
Carnelians are transmuted into Inferno Rubys and cut into Brilliant, Bold and Delicate and put on the AH.

Alicites are made into pendants and sent over to the priest to DE them and put the mats on AH or use the mats to make enchant a scroll and than put it on AH.

Jaspers are made into rings, sent over to the priest and DE-d, mats put on the Ah or made into a scroll and than AH, some are also sent back to the dk to make the De-weaponized mechanical companion and put on the AH.

Hessonites are made into bands, sent over to the priest and DE-d, mats put on the AH or made into scrolls and than AH. Some are also transmuted into Ember Topazes, cut and put on the AH.
Nightstones are made into chokers, sent over to the priest and DE-d, mats put on the AH or made into scrolls and than AH. Some are also transmuted into Demonseyes, cut and put on the AH.

Not all green quality gems are used, I keep some to put on the Ah when the daily jc quest requires them.

Alchemy is used to make potions and transmute gems and living elements which are used to make dreamcloth.
Dreamcloth is made into spellthreads and sometimes into an Illustrious bag.

For managing the Ah I use two add-ons - auctioneer and Trade Skill Master. They work like magic for my gold making life.

I also buy BOE recipes over the world and put them on the AH, BOE pets as well.
Faction specific pets are put onto the neutral AH and, using a char on the other faction, they are announced on the trade channel.

When selling items/looking for work with professions through the trade channel I do my best to make a few interesting macros to attract the customers.

I often try out the tactics you put on your blog but no need to mention them here as you know them already.

I hope this information is useful to you at least a bit.

Best regards,
Misha"

Congrats to the winner, and once again thank you all for taking the time to enter. It is greatly appreciated, and I look forward to bringing you more contests in the future.

Wes

Fortune and Fighting: New Gold Blog

With only a few more days until the Winged Guardian Giveaway I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce you all to a new up-and-coming writer here in the Gold Making Community. You may know him as @Darkfriend337 on Twitter, but I know him as my friend David. He's started a fantastic blog that has a very unique style and and twist on writing about making gold in the World Of Warcraft.

While most us do something else in the game besides just make gold, some us take that to a whole new level. He is one of those people. A progression raider who dabbles in the gold making business on the side. This unique experience makes for a different perspective then what most of us are use to.

His blog, Fortune and Fighting chronicles his journey making gold and raiding and how the two interconnected. To start, he's launched a three part series about the importance of knowledge when making gold in the World Of Warcraft. So in between your auction posts, dungeon runs, and PvP antics, take a look and Fortune and Fighting. It will be worth your time!

Justice Point Boots: Add 6k to your Weekly Income

And you thought those boots would be worthless, didn't you? Think again, friends! Over the past few days I embarked on a little experiment. After talking with Cold of Cold's Gold Factory on the Auction House Junkies Podcast and my conversations with Flux from Powerword: Gold and Nev from AH Addict on the Power Word: Gold Podcast guest appearance, I decided I would take all of these folks advice, and jump on a market I thought would be long dead. Talk about easy money!

Why are these 359 Item Level Boots Selling?
That has been the question I continually asked myself. But with some research and some time in the market, I realized why. For all intents and purposes, these are great boots for any character. Whether they be your main, or an alt you just hit 85 with, these are some great boots that you won't necessarily replace easily. Moreover, on most servers prices have hit the point where they are decently affordable for most players.

On my server, I've been able to move a couple pairs of boots for 2,500 - 3,000 gold. That's a great return on the justice points that take to buy these boots. An even better return if you buy them off a player and use the Auction House as a vessel to flip them.

How To Obtain Them
You have a couple of opitions. The first opition is the most obvious. With your Justice Points. If you don't need anything that you can buy with Justice Points, these is a sure winner for liquidating your points and adding some gold to your pocket. You can even take this a step further. If you're utilizing PvP or Tol'Barad, you can trade in your honor points at a lose for Justice Points and use a combination of your Justice and Honor points to purchase more of these boots. This may make reaching 1650 Justice Points seem like a much easier process, thus adding a bigger stream of revenue to your overall earnings.

If you don't fancy spending your Justice Points on the boots themselves, then your next option is a little more Goblin inspired. You're going to be doing some flipping. While these can be as easy as just buying them off the Trade chat, if you use a little more imagination, you'll be able to scoop a bunch of these up and land yourself a nice profit margin. For me, I shoot for a 1,000 gold profit margin with 500 being the bare minimum. While I could lower that margin, I don't want to sit on these boots for long unless I get them at a great price. I use a little macro like this:
"/2 Anyone have an extra 1800 justice points and need some gold? PST"

That's all I say. I usually get a lot of whispers. What I don't do is say anything about boots in the macro, nor do I use the exact point amount. This helps to curb what I'm actually talking about. It keeps people from piping in offering more. I then go on to tell the player about my new 85 character that doesn't exist and I how I need to get them some boots so they can get into heroics. I then mention that I have 1500 gold saved up that I could spend if it would help them out. Some players blow them off, while others happily pocket the gold. It's a numbers game, the more people your proposition, the more bites you will have.

How To Profit
Now that you're two ways of obtaining the boots have been established, let's talk about how to actually profit on them. I came up with the 6k figure by determining with an average of two pairs of boots being able to be bought on a weekly basis by combining PvP and Justice points with very little effort, the average player can add 6k gold to there income on a weekly basis. That's 24k gold a month. Sounds pretty nice, doesn't it? By simply playing the game. Of course you can make quite a lot more if you take the Goblin method, but that involves just a bit more risk.

Basically the point of the post is to inform you that you shouldn't write off 359 Item Level boots as a form of profit, just because they arn't the latest and greatest, doesn't mean they aren't a great way to turn some easy profits!

Bloodthirsty Pyrium: A Blacksmiths New Best Friend

A new PvP season is upon us in the World Of Warcraft. That means there are tons of great gold making opportunities that need to be taken advantage of. However, the most important thing I wanted to talk about today was the gold making opportunities for blacksmiths.

If you haven't heard, during patch 4.2 BoE blue quality blacksmith gear got a fantastic buff upgrading its item level. Blizzard implemented this change to make new characters getting into PvP competitive with the current items that are out there for veteran players. Evening things back up every season is great for two reasons.

It makes it less intimidating for new players to get started, and it gives those veteran players the drive to push forward and get that new gear to obtain that competitive advantage once again. Blizzard has done a great job of keeping what could have turned into a tired game into something players are excited to participate in season in and season out. With that information in mind, Blacksmiths have landed a fantastic opportunity to take advantage of the item change.

Bloodthirsty Pyrium
That's right my blacksmithing friends, Bloodthirsty Pyrium sets are going to be your best friend as this next arena season begins. These will be some of your biggest sellers and yield some of your highest profit margins. Why? Because of the demand. The largest majority of players who take part in PvP will be using this set. (Ok, that's debatable, but for this article lets say it's true) This set appeals across the entire plate wearing spectrum of classes and everyone can benefit from it. It's not pigeonholed into a certain audience like the Ornate set is. It's wide appeal means these will have a consistent sell rate and you won't have to sit on these too terribly long.

How To Craft

You can tackle this one of two ways. You can focus in on the entire set, or you can pick one or two pieces that tend to sell the best on your server or provide you with the highest return on investment. Rather then craft the whole set, I'd tend to go with the pieces that seem to move at the fastest rate and the biggest profit margin. To find out this on your particular server, you'll need to check The Undermine Journal. However, the best pieces tend to be Helm, Chest, and Legs. This is because these traditionally cost the most honor points to obtain. Players are more apt to purchase cheaper PvP gear first, which means rather then spend the points they'll buy these off the Auction House.

It's Never Been Easier
One final note to all of you blacksmiths. As long as you have the PvP patterns already, you don't have to buy new patterns to make these items. You're spellbook has already converted. So with that said, get to work!

Strategy Discussion: The Gem Wall

This is something I've wanted to talk about for awhile, so I think it will make a fantastic topic for today's post. One the most recent episode of Auction House Junkies I had a great discussion with Cold of Cold's Gold Factory about the current state of the Red Gem market post patch 4.2. His argument was hold out and keep your gems until everyone else runs out of stock. Don't settle for the small profits. It's a good theory. It's especially important to those who have stockpiled a small amount of Red Gems. Wait for the prices to go back up, and then reap your benefits.

However, this is not the way I'm looking to do things this time around. I wrote lots of articles on how I was stocking up on inferno rubies. For example, why it's important to be transmute spec and my Heartblossom buyout strategy. When all was said and done, I had just under a full guild tab of inferno rubies at my disposal. So you have to believe that I've been "chomping at the bit" to get some of these things moved.

Prices started out trending around 140g each, and then dipping down to 80-90g each. So yes, it does make sense to sell the gems at 140g each, but I also have a massive volume to move. The point that Cold was making is that you need let people weed out there stock, swoop in, raise the price and cash in for there. That's great if you only have a few and have patients. For me, I'm taking a different road.

Gem Walling
If you remember the old term "Glyph Walling" it basically means posting so many of one glyph at a price that undercuts the competition they simply cannot compete. I'm taking this concept to heart with inferno rubies. I'll post 20 gems, and I'll have three or four undercuts come in and post another 8 combined. What do I do? I post another 15 below them. I can do this so many times because of my stock. My goal is to essentially make it where the other players cannot compete and then I can fully control the market. This causes and fast market shift and leads to a quicker change in market culture. While it would take weeks for these other players to sell out on their on, having 10-15 competitors at posting 3-4 gems at a time, I'm simply taking the strong arm mentality to bully them out of the market.

Now let me be honest, this is not a tactic I have tried before in the past. However, so far I'm having great success. Every time we undercut each other down to 80g, I buy out the stock and reset the price. So eventually I will be able to have obtained all of the other players stock, and then resell at my higher set price.

So that's my strategy currently. Are any of you guys still battling out in the Red Gem market? Or have you moved on to greener pastures? This is fun for me, I love trying new gold making tactics. Let me know about your successes in 4.2 by leaving a comment at the bottom or sending me an E-mail at CappedByCata@Gmail.com or on twitter @CappedByCata

Abandoned Markets: Did you forget something?

What a wild wild week it has been this week in the World Of Warcraft. The player base has been blessed with all of the goodness of patch 4.2 That means the Gold making game has gotten a much needed economic stimulus directly from Blizzard themselves. The economy has once again taken off and players are spending more then ever before. Some markets are doing very well. For example, take a look at was has been selling for me this week

However, today's post is not going to be all about inferno rubies or why truegold is so important . No today's post is going to dive into some markets that are doing great despite not being bolstered by patch 4.2

I have a 60 Rogue from a previous Refer-A-Friend that has been sitting in level one starter gear. Now that we are able to move characters around the selection screen, I got tired of looking at my deprived undead killing machine. So I decided I would shoot some Heirlooms and gold her way and get her a little more equipped to tackle Hellfire Peninsula. Upon doing this, I discovered two markets that were either severely over priced, or just didn't exist at all.

Netherweave Bags
Alright, I'll be the first to admit. I messed up on this one. Netherweave bags used to be a market I consistently controlled. Back in Wrath of the Lich King, it was me and one other player and we kept the market to ourselves. However, once Cataclysm came out I dropped tailoring off my banker to pick up Alchemy so I could take advantage of the Maelstrom shuffle. Which ironically enough, was removed from the game just one week later. So once all of my stock ran out, I didn't even look into netherweave bags anymore. Man, have I been missing out! Netherweave bags on my server are currently running players anywhere from 25-30 gold each. That's almost double what they were selling for at the beginning of Cataclysm. Even with the Goblin boom. The reasoning behind this is because players are so overwhelmed with the new patch those casual auctioneers have began to dissipate from the auction house. Which leaves markets like this open for those who are willing to invest some time into them. My advice is that if you have a tailor, look at the prices of cloth and the prices of bags on your server. If there is a big discrepancy, take advantage of it. The great thing about netherweave bags is that you don't have to sit on them long, as the average player usually buys them five at a time.

50-70 Weapons
What the hell, aye? All I wanted to do was to buy my Rogue two weapons to hang out with. I didn't care what they were. But when I looked on the auction house I was only able to round up 3 one handed weapons between the level of 50 and 70. One was a fist weapon with intellect, the other was an axe with spirit. But you know what I did? I bought them. Because I didn't have a choice! The moral of the story is that there is an outstanding shortage of level 50-70 weapons being posted on the Auction House. The reasoning behind this is because most players are benefiting from the Dungeon Finder and Auto Disenchant Button. Both of these are great implementations, but they have left those of us who just want to buy something cool looking for our profession alt out in the cold. My advice here, Greed! Stop Disenchanting everything when you run dungeons on your alts. I mean honestly, are you even using the mats? I doubt it. Greed those greens and put them on the Auction House. List them for big mark up prices. I think 50-80 Gold isn't too much to pay. Even the weapon is good, say has a big dose of agility on it, maybe list it for more. In markets like this that have all but disappeared from the game, you have the opportunity to set the price and be the only supplier. Take advantage!

Before I end this, I want to mention a few things:
My good friend and Auction House Junkies Co-Host has a promotion going on this week for his Amazing Mysterious Fortune Card Mastery Guide. This is a great way to take advantage of another Abandoned Market in the World Of Warcraft, and you too can be making 35k gold overnight.
